Still on a high from his O Plate win last week, Matt won all the heats and the final at the October PF International Club meeting at the weekend, finishing with a lead of over 3.5 seconds in the Final and coming through from the back of the field in the second heat.
Matt won his first senior level race at the weekend, in the Open Championship at Shenington, where the country’s best racers come together to pit their skills against each other and the conditions. Racing for Tim Parrott Motorsport, Matt was the youngest of the serious competitors at just 17.
Matt took second place at Larkhall in the Super One, racing against drivers with ten years more experience like Michael Simpson and Dan Holland.
Matt was very fast at Shenington but suffered problems in several races. In the end only a few PSI of tyre pressure stood between him and a podium - here's Matt's update from the weekend.
Last weekend on Saturday the team took me testing at PFI. My usual mechanic Tom Arme was also testing alongside me on Saturday in the same class, as he is racing the one-off event Kartmasters, using Florent Lamberts equipment in Senior Rotax.
There were mixed results at Buckmore for Matt but he learned a lot and was impressively fast.
Matt is improving lots since he has moved up to Senior Max. He took 5th in his first heat from starting at the back and in his second heat he went off in the front with the experienced Michael Simpson until he was pushed out into a half spin at the first hairpin and recovered to 6th. He was just four hundreds off the fastest lap.
In Senior Max Matt was extremely fast in the wet heats on Sunday with a 4th from 31st! He also had a win and unfortunately a DNF due to a incident which left him with a flat tyre. In the final he started 11th and finished a steady 8th, struggling to get to grips with the track and the chassis.
Matt Mason was ecstatic this weekend after taking his maiden national wins in the prestigious BRDC Stars of Tomorrow championship. The 16-year-old, who races in Junior Max, was competing in a double-header meeting at Shenington in Oxfordshire so there was a full programme on both Saturday and Sunday.
Matthew Mason could arguably claim to be BRDC Stars of Tomorrow's most improved driver of 2007, and made such an impression towards the end of the campaign he has now set his sights firmly on the 2008 crown.
